Chengdu enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate. It is warm and wet all year with a season of heavy rain that peaks during July and August. The annual temperature averages 16°C (60.8℉). To summarize the climate of Chengdu, it has "an early spring, hot summer, cool autumn and warm winter". It is very misty all year, and there aren't many sunny days. The temperature is not so high in summer, but it is very muggy because of the high humidity. The temperature is generally above 5°C (41℉) during winter. However, since it is usually very cloudy and humid in Chengdu, the winters tend to get cold.

The best time to visit is between March and June or between September and November. The hottest season here is during July and August. During this time, the humidity can give the impression that temperatures are hotter than they actually are. There are, however, a few nice spots (such as Qingcheng Mountain) outside the city center where it is possible to get some shade and respite from the heat. This summer period also is the rainy season so visitors will have to deal with the wet weather as well. Visitors planning on hiking in the mountains may wish to avoid this season, as hiking trails can become quite slick. Those who do hike during this time may wish to buy a set of straw-matted outer soles to strap to their shoes for better traction.
