Cantonese Opera is the main drama class in the Guangdong area. It originated from the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644). There were performances in the Ming and the Qing Dynasty(1616-1912). At the beginning, the singing language used was the official one of opera bamboo-sheds. Gradually it was sung in Cantonese. Cantonese Opera is popular in Guangxi, Hong Kong and Macau. Other Chinese drama like Yick Yeung Pitch and Kwan Pitch etc are included in Cantonese Opera.
Located in Haizhu district, Jiangnan Theater is one of the very important Cantonese Opera Bases of Guangzhou. It monthly puts on the performances of traditional Cantonese opera at least. Jiangnan Theater with seats of 907 and three cinema halls in different sizes is also a karaoke party and a night club. There is a coffee room, buffet and table tennis for your choice. After the combination of Jiangnan Theater and Hongdou Cantonese Opera Group, it is noe becoming a touring theater for receiving fans of Cantonese Operas from home and abroad.
