Two or three days are enough to experience Shanghai. If you have more days in China, it is recommended to go to Shanghai extensions like Suzhou, Hangzhou and Mt. Huangshan. Suzhou is a city of gardens and canals and Hangzhou is reputed as "the most beautiful and elegant city in the world" If you are interested in Water Towns, then you will find it is convenience to get to Wuzhen Water Town and Zhouzhuang Water Town.
There are more attractions in other cities besides Shanghai and its extensions. Shanghai has direct flights to most of the cities so you can take a plane to anywhere you want. Beijing and Xi'an are recommended to those who are enthusiatic with history and culture; Yunnan and Guilin are famous for their natural scene which are worth to have a visit.
