Though the nightlife in Datong is not so exciting and brilliant as that of many modern metropolises, most people could find what they need most.

When the night comes, most younger generations like drinking in the bars, having some coffee with friends in cafes, or having a comfortable hot bath in saunas, as well as doing some sports in health clubs, while the older generations prefer to live a more peaceful life. Some of them like to take a walk or go to the street to play chess. The city's squares and parks are their best destinations to spend the nightlife. Many Women would get together on the squares to perform ballroom dance, Yang Ge dance or other local characteristic activities.

Theatres and Concerts are also popular places for people to congregate and relax. Situated in Yantong West Road, Datong Theatre mainly shows the local Jin Operas and it is very crowded on the weekend during 8 pm to 10 pm.

Acrobatics

Datong is known for its acrobatics. "Balancing on a Plank and Bowls Topping" by the Datong Acrobatic Troupe won a silver medal at the Ninth World Acrobatics of Tomorrow Festival and the troupe's "Plate Spinning and Jumping through Hoops" were winners of the Silver Lion Medal at the National Acrobatics Tournament.

Night Cruise

After viewing the shimmering waters of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers from South Mountain, you may also want to take a night tour aboard a cruise ship to view the city's night views. Fares for a 2-hour cruise tour range from RMB30 to RMB80 per person. Tours run from 7 to 10 o'clock in the evening and depart from the Chaotianmen Dock.

Dragon Lantern Dance

The dragon lanterns made in Tongliang County, Datong are known far and wide. There is a custom of doing dragon lantern dances during the Lantern Festival (15th of the first lunar month). When it gets dark various dragon dances are done on the streets with colorful lights hanging from above, looking like dragons roaming in river of light. They are performed amidst percussion musical instruments and a display of fireworks, creating an exhilarating scene of joy and celebration.

Nan Bin Road Bars Street

Stretching along the Yangtze River, you will have no problem finding Nan Bin Road--just look for the dazzling neon lights. It is a good place to relax where you will find many bars, pubs, cafe and teahouses, each offering a unique style and flavor. The street has become a hub for nighttime leisure in Datong.
