Day 1 Arrival in Pingyao (Lunch)

Today's Activities

Welcome to Pingyao! Upon arrival, you'll be picked up at the Pingyao Train Station or Taiyuan Airport and then transferred to hotel for check-in and a brief rest.

After lunch, your wonderful Pingyao tour will kick off with sightseeing in the Ancient City of Pingyao. Its Ancient City Wall should be on your must-see list. The pattern of the walls is shaped like a turtle - a traditional Chinese symbol of longevity - with the south gate and north gate representing the head and tail respectively.

Visit the museum - Rishengchang Exchange Shop which was offerred remittance services, accepted deposits and made loans to the merchants during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Then stroll around along the Mingqing Street, where you can sample gourmet local food or pick up souvenirs for friends and families while appreciating the courtyard houses of the Ming and Qing Dynasty style.

The feudal Ancient Government Office of Pingyao and the Ancient Security Guard Company (Biaoju in Chinese, once used to escort transportation of bulks of treasury with cold weapons) are also on your tour list.

As one of the Chinese Historic and Cultural Cities and with a history of over 2,700 years, the Ancient City of Pingyao is among the best preserved ancient cities in China and on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is an outstanding example of a Han Chinese city of the Ming and Qing dynasties (14th - 20th centuries) that has retained all its features. It displays a remarkably complete picture of cultural, social, economic, and religious development during one of the most vital periods of Chinese history.

Day 2 Pingyao - Mianshan Mountain (Breakfast, Lunch)

Today's Activities

After breakfast, drive about 1 hour (130km) to Mianshan Mountain (20km away from Jiexiu town center). Mianshan Mountain is noted for its natural scenery as well as for its cultural and religious relics. You'll have about 40 minutes to explore the largest and most magnificent temple on Mianshan - Daluo Temple, also called "Potala Palace in Northern China", which houses numerous Taoist texts, including the wooden engravings of Dao De Jing (Tao Te Ching) by Laozi (Lao-tzu).

In the afternoon, enjoy the natural scenery of Mianshan Mountain. First comes the Shuitao Valley (about 2.5 hours for sightseeing), which is covered by dense, verdant plants year-round. The green vegetation not only endows the mountain with vitality, but also creates a natural fairyland for animals. Be refreshed by the plants and the dozens of waterfalls cascading down the mountain slopes.

Then visit the Buddhist Yunfeng Temple (40 minutes), appreciating the awe-inspiring site of Hanging Bell, the human-sized statues, as well as the Tiesuo Ridge. Yunfeng Temple is inside of the Baofu Cave which houses over 200 temple rooms and can hold thousands of people. Looking from the bottom of the cave, the temple and winding paths seem to hover in the air of the beautiful mountains surroundings.

Later of the day, drive back to Pingyao and stay overnight there.

Mianshan Mountain is the birthplace of Qingming Festival (Grave Cleaning Day) in China, which is one of China's most important traditional festivals and items of intagible cultural heritage.
