- For the first time in my travel memory (which covers many decades), I have nothing but good things to say about a hotel. Given that the building is only 5 years old, it should seem modern and attractive, but this still surprised at the quality of fit-and-finish and attention to the smallest details. It was incredible! From arrival at the check-in desk where everything was handled smoothly and satisfactorily, to departure, the entire staff was friendly, courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful. The room was, of course, a touch small by American standards, but completely adequate in every regard for a couple. Everything in the room worked as expected and amenities were far superior to all but, perhaps, much more expensive establishments. The mini-fridge was expected, of course, but what was not expected was the half-dozen free beverages such as a bottle of orange juice, soft drink, beer, juice, milk tea and more - all of which were name brands an not local knock-offs. The bed was typically firm, but not unacceptably so. The hot water was hot and plentiful, and the wi-fi was free. Given the quality of both service and infrastructure, I'm amazed that the price was so moderate.
The business center and fitness center are well equipped, and there are two restaurants, but we did not dine there, so cannot comment about them. We'll make a point of patronizing them next month and report at that time.
The location is great. The US Consulate, a couple of metro stations and dozens of dining and shopping venues are within a 10-minute walk, or less, from the hotel. However, if you arrive in Guangzhou by train and feel that you must take a taxi, it will cost about 16 Yuan, or USD $2.61. Hard to beat, right? I don't know the cost from the airport, but since there's a subway line to the airport, you can take either the train or a taxi.
You're waiting for a negative, so here it is: the outside of the building, while quite clean and well maintained, is surprisingly understated and simply doesn't give the impression of the remarkable hotel inside - which probably added to our very pleasant surprise.
Without hesitation, I highly recommend the Leeden for everyone, and I look forward to staying there again when my business takes me back to Guangzhou next month.
Room Tip: There are 32 floors, and the higher to you , the better the views.
